Summer term 2010 clerks' briefing sessions - notes and evaluations
The summer term clerks briefing sessions all took place in the first two weeks of term, and were attended by more than ninety clerks across Essex.
The agenda for the briefings included:
- A look at the summer term agenda for the Governing Body, and a look ahead to the autumn term meeting. A suggestion was made that "safeguarding" should be included as a regular item on the agenda, and it was agreed that this was good practice;
- A report from the ECA Annual General Meeting;
- An information update about the ECA Briefing paper No 10 on School Staffing Structure Changes and Redundancy, news about the Clerks' Handbook which is in the process of being updated and an essential update on the Independent Safeguarding Authority and registration on the Vetting and Barring Scheme register;
- Information about the new mandatory requirement to report schools' energy usage as part of the Carbon Reduction Scheme (CRC);
- An update on round two of Financial Management Standards in Schools (FMSiS), our newly published briefing paper No 11 on the topic, and a valuable opportunity to discuss best practice when minuting finance meetings. There are a number of examples of model finance minutes on our Model Agendas and Minutes page.
Clerks were reminded that the annual clerks' conference is being held on Thursday 17 June at Stock Brook Country Club, and that there are two more opportunities to attend the Refresher Training for Established Clerks:
- Tuesday 6 July 1.30 pm - 4.00 pm at the Wickford Centre
- Thursday 8 July 9.30 am - 12 noon at the Holiday Inn, Eight Ash Green.
To book a place at any of these events please contact Kim on 01245 436374 or by email at
Notes of the session, including references and guidance, are available for your information.
The evaluations of the briefings continue to be very positive - comments included:
- A good opportunity to be notified of the latest developments in a very complex and constantly changing environment;
- It's very helpful to receive this information at the beginning of term and to learn from the experiences of other clerks.
- As always there is something useful to take away.
The full summary of evaluations can be found on the website.
